Announcement: Sustainable SSU Spring 2021 Intern

Please join Sustainable SSU in welcoming our Spring 2021 semester intern Abbey Serio, to our team. Abbey will be focusing her work on creating outreach through our social media accounts. Abbey is graduating this spring with a Geography, Environment, and Planning (GEP) major and Business Minor.

When Abbey arrived at SSU, her initial sights were focused on Early Childhood Development and becoming a teacher. However, her first class was a GEP course on Global Environmental Issues that changed her direction. She became so fired up and impassioned and wanted to do something to make a more immediate effect, and so changed her major. She decided adding a Business minor would improve her understanding of how big corporations were responsible for the emissions and how to create more sustainable businesses. Throughout her time at SSU, she has been involved in the Sustainability Club and Greek Life. This summer, she participated in the Citizens Climate Lobby for Higher Education program. They attended talks and participated in discussion boards and the culmination of the project was writing her own piece on Environmental Racism and redlining. Abbey is originally from San Diego and loves spending time outdoors; hiking, sailing and paddle boarding are some of her favorite activities. She feels like she can see the impact of our actions, or inaction, more immediately when spending time outside. Her goals following graduation include working as an Environmental consultant or for a firm that does that type of work, and helping business become more sustainable and eco-friendly.
