Student-led groups are an essential aspect of campus culture. From volunteer and social events to advocacy and reform, clubs and organizations at Sonoma State University heighten the overall student experience while simultaneously benefiting the community. A recently revived club, Geography, Environment, and Planning (GEP) is a perfect example of student unity and community engagement. Club secretary, Elise Piazza, is excited to express her devotion for the environment through her leadership position. “This club is so great because it brings people of all concentrations together with a common passion for environmental education and activism.”
With active members from various majors and involvement from Geography, Environment and Planning students and professors, this club is loaded with endless potential and ideas. For GEP Club, this semester is all about establishing goals, creating structure and increasing involvement.
Just a couple of months into the Fall 2019 semester, GEP Club has already developed a new logo, volunteered at various events and hosted a potluck. There is much more planned for this club in the future. With a mission to increase sustainable efforts on campus and advocate for environmental awareness, GEP Club hopes to become involved in the continuous shift towards sustainability on campus. A collaboration with Culinary Services Sustainability Coordinator, Shay Furze, has been planned to establish more environmentally conscious food purchasing and waste habits here at SSU.
GEP Club hopes to continue expanding membership and experiences. Everyone is welcome to attend meetings every other Tuesday from 3-4pm in Stevenson 3042 (announcements are sent out via the GEP department listserv). If you are unable to attend meetings, stay updated by fallowing GEP Club on Instagram.
