November 10, 2020 marked a monumental day in SSU’s sustainable endeavors as the groundbreaking of the Stevenson Hall Renovation Groundbreaking video was released. Built in 1967, Stevenson Hall was the first academic building constructed on campus, and is known for housing disciplines such as our School of Education, Social Sciences, and Business & Economics.

After over 50 years, SSU’s largest academic building is undergoing exciting upgrades which include many sustainable improvements. Students, faculty, or any user of Stevenson Hall will experience a building designed to LEED Gold standards, but they won’t have to worry about missing the old building too much. Always keeping sustainability in mind, much of the existing infrastructure is being reused and retrofitted, rather than constructing an entirely new building.

Other sustainable design highlights that users can look forward to--but aren’t limited to--include, increased natural daylight, air quality, and thermal comfort--as well as water and energy efficiency, and programmatic functionality. Christopher Dinno, SSU’s Chief Planning Officer for the renovation, leads the project design and construction effort for Stevenson Hall. He says, “The re-imagined Stevenson Hall is designed for the 21st century academic learning environment and will create a complete experience for student and faculty engagement and success, in an environment that will stimulate teaching and learning, and will contribute and is in alignment with the university’s mission, core values, and strategic priorities.” The renovation is tentatively scheduled to be completed in the Summer of 2022, and you can keep up with project updates and learn more on the Stevenson Hall Renovation Project webpage. Be sure to check back here, and on Sustainable SSU’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for any announcements regarding the renovation as well.
